GEARWRENCH 82244 54 oz Dead Blow Hammer with Polyurethane Head and Steel Reinforced Handle

This thing transfers serious force into ball joints and control arm bushings without the hammer jumping back at you. The 54 oz head has real mass behind it. Handle has survived hundreds of swings in my shop without a crack. For $12.50 it's an absolute steal.

Two whacks and the rusted hub popped free after my regular hammer did nothing. No rebound, no bounce. Buy it.

I use this mostly on my diesel pickup for seating parts and knocking loose suspension components. The polyurethane doesn't mar surfaces I need to reuse, and the steel-reinforced handle gives me confidence it won't snap. It's a bit heavy for overhead work, hence four stars, but that's just the nature of a 54 oz head.

It hits hard and rebounds less than a standard hammer, which is what I wanted. However the handle gets slippery when my hands are sweaty or oily, so I've had to wrap it with grip tape. Function is fine for the price.

At 55 I've ruined plenty of mallets and chipped plenty of hubs with wrong hammers. This dead blow seats bearings squarely and the reduced rebound means my shoulder isn't taking the punishment anymore. My apprentice already ordered his own. Excellent tool.

Dropped it on concrete from a lift, zero damage. Still hits like a freight train. Can't ask for more.

Mine showed a small gap where the polyurethane meets the handle out of the box, and it grew after a week of use. Customer service is sending a replacement so I'll update, but quality control on this one missed.
