The GearWrench 68-540G 31 oz dead blow ball pein hammer is built for striking punches and chisels and for shaping and straightening unhardened metal — the best-fit hammer for fabricators, mechanics, and machinists who need sustained impact without rebound. Buy it online now for $47.15, half off the $94.29 compare-at price.
A steel shot canister in the head sustains impact, maximizes force, reduces rebound, and absorbs shock — more controlled striking than a standard steel hammer.
The steel face and pein excel at driving punches and chisels and at shaping or straightening unhardened metals, while the polyurethane body is non-sparking for safer work environments.
Compared to lighter models like the 68-524G, the 68-540G's 31 oz head delivers more force per strike for heavier punch, chisel, and forming work. Choose the 68-540G when you need maximum sustained impact.
At 31 oz, the hammer delivers serious force while the steel-reinforced, knurled handle resists overstrike breakage and keeps grip secure.

I do metal shaping and bodywork as a hobby and this hammer is exactly what the description promises. The dead blow design means the energy goes into the workpiece instead of bouncing back into my wrist. Used it on a dolly for panel work and for seating bearings, and it's superb at both. The ball pein end shapes metal beautifully without marring. Grip stays comfortable even with gloves on. At half price this was a no-brainer.
The 31 oz head has some serious mass behind it and the low rebound really reduces fatigue. Coated face protects surfaces better than plain steel. It's a specialty tool but I find myself reaching for it more than expected.
Hits hard, no bounce. Exactly what I needed.
I've owned plenty of dead blows and this one is up there with the best. Drifting pins on heavy equipment, tapping bearings into housings, straightening brackets, it handles everything I throw at it. The rebound is nearly nonexistent so my elbow thanks me at the end of a shift. Balance is good for a hammer this weight. Should last a decade at least.
Build quality is there and the dead blow action works great. Fair warning though, 31 ounces is a lot if you're not used to it. My forearm gets tired after extended use. Probably better suited for someone doing heavier striking work than my light assembly tasks.
Only had it a few weeks and the outer coating is already scuffing and marking light-colored work. Expected better from GearWrench.
